A story for you.
I had a boyfriend in university, a drummer in a band called The Rhythm Pigs, whose mother really loved me. She was a teacher and made the most delicious Greek lemon chicken. When I broke up with her son, she cried and brought me pink tulips. My next boyfriend had a mother who didn't love me; she had a curly perm (it was the 80s) and made comments like, "Catherine, you wear your heart on your sleeve." Her face was always sour when she said my name.
Which woman was right?
They both were.
I am not for everyone. Neither are you. And that's why our job in this life is to run toward the people who "get" us, and give a happy wave goodbye to the people who don't.
It's what Glennon Doyle says:
People will tell you that you're too loud. Or too introverted. Or too serious. Or maybe they just won't know what to do with you in general.
But here's the thing: we've been put on this planet to express ourselves. To BE ourselves. If that means writing your truth and kitchen dancing and hugging your teenagers and loving your dog as if she's a person and wearing hot pink and going grey and being effusive and wearing your heart on your sleeve...that is okay.
You are meant to show up as you.
I'm going to show up as me.
When we find our people, it's like fireworks and magic. We all know this feeling.
So what do we do with the people who don't love us? I use a trick I learned when I collaborated on Choosing Happiness -- the book is available world-wide, if you're interested.
Try this. Imagine putting that person in a boat and pushing the boat out to sea, far far away from you. Wave goodbye and go dance with your people.
Have the best weekend, my friends.
